Almost A Proverb is based on the real life experiences of Dann Glenn who served with the 101st Airborne, deployed in the A Shau Valley during the Vietnam war.
However, “This is not a celebration of war. In these pages you will not find the trite formulation of ‘duty, honor, country’ or vulgar, two-dimensional Sgt. Rock heroes. There are only very real men who live like animals and fight and die for one another out of the tenderest human love imaginable...”
Dann, aka Crazy,..."is by no means a simple character. By turns obstreperous and serene, he embodies all the contradictions of the war. One moment, Crazy is a berserk warrior who kills skillfully, without remorse; at the same time, he is a solicitous den-mother to his brothers-in-arms, clucking and fretting, caring lovingly for his brood... He bears more contempt for the pusillanimous government that has sent him to Vietnam than for the brave men he is forced to kill." [Excerpts from Foreword by Dr. Timothy P. Kinsella PhD/ The University of Washington]
From the disillusionment of an abusive childhood, to the rush of war and testosterone, to the sexually explosive, yet tender relationship with the seductive Sukanda, Almost A Proverb is a breathless adventure into the mind, body and soul of a young warrior, and exposes how and why it is that so many Veterans suffer from the “emotional deadness, hyper-arousal, and explosive rage” associated with post-traumatic stress disorder.
